Additional Information:

Gayo Organic Coffee Farmers Association ( or PPKGO)  is an organic, Fair Trade cooperative located in the Gayo highlands of the Aceh province of Sumatra, Indonesia an area largely committed to coffee production.

This is an environmentally sensitive region, which contains critical watershed areas and sanctuaries for endangered species.  This fertile and landlocked mountainous region is the largest producer of Arabica coffee in Southeast Asia.

PPKGO farmers believe in producing a high-quality product from the ground up, taking the ecosystem into account and using a labor intensive organic system effectively pruning, controlling erosion, recycling organic matter and enhancing biodiversity.   All of PPKGOs farmers cultivate organic coffee in diverse shade ecosystems at altitudes of 1,100-1,500 meters.

With Fair Trade revenues generated by PPKGO since 2000, the cooperative has invested in a cupping lab at its export processing plant in Medan, with another cupping lab at the cooperatives office in Aceh.  The PPKGO is also able to provide technical assistance and sustainability through support in the non-chemical control of pests, diseases and weeds as well as training in the uses of organic fertilization methods.  Community development has also been an area that PPKGPO has helped, funding a potable water system that now benefits more than 1,500 people in five communities, as well as creating new jobs.
